The Quinns of Hamilton

I dedicate these pages to the memory of my father, John Paul Quinn, who told me stories about his father, Francis Joseph Quinn, the Military Cross winner, and his grandfather, Francis William Quinn, the painter and commercial artist.

He created the thirst to find out more.

This attempt at the reconstruction of family history is also undertaken on behalf of my cousins the Quinns of Welland, and the O’Briens of Hamilton, and for my sister and brother and specifically for my brother’s children who represent the next generation.

I will correct any mistakes as they are pointed out to me. Gradually I will try to fill in the gaps. The connection to Ireland is with John Quinn who came over in 1841 or ’42 and first moved to Montreal before finally settling in Hamilton on Sept. 3rd, 1853.

It would be great to have someone visit Newtownwards, County of Down, Ireland at some point over the next few years. This is where John Quinn’s mother died and most likely is buried.

The records there would help uncover the Irish branches of the family tree and perhaps reveal how John Quinn came to be born on the Greek Island of Cephalonia.
